Independent Celebrant · Life Story Writer
Ceremonies & Stories
by Jodie Thurston
Honouring lives through words that last, and ceremonies worth remembering.
Based in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, I support families in creating meaningful, personal ceremonies that truly reflect the life of the person you’ve lost. My role is to remove as much pressure as possible, so you can focus on what matters most, knowing everything is being handled with thought and sensitivity.
Choosing a Celebrant or life story writer is personal.
It's not just about the service provided, it is also how comfortable and understood you feel.
In these moments, connection really matters.
Becoming a funeral celebrant was a personal choice for me. I spent the first 15 years of my career working in global law and accountancy firms as an HR professional. While I valued supporting people and resolving conflict, it wasn’t fulfilling in the way I had hoped.
Like everyone else, I am unfortunately no stranger to bereavement. I have experienced loss throughout my life, and I have supported others through their own grief, both personally and professionally. I became a trained Mental Health First Aider back in 2017, and I have actively fundraised for charities supporting mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and baby loss.
I feel emotions deeply, and I search for the meaning within every story, no matter how difficult. Although I have stepped away from my corporate career, I’m grateful for the resilience, composure, and problem-solving skills it gave me, especially when navigating complex and sensitive situations.
The skills I have developed, alongside my lived experience, have shaped the way I listen. Beyond facts and timelines, I’m drawn to the essence of a person. I will help you to bring to life the quieter details that reveal who someone truly was; the small, telling moments, the relationships that held meaning, and the experiences that defined them.
Storytelling isn’t just something I love, it’s how I make sense of people. I approach every ceremony with care and respect, creating something that doesn’t simply describe a person, but reflects their presence, character, and the imprint they leave behind. Whether you are looking for something traditional, quirky, or even uplifting – I can help you create this whilst preserving the dignity your loved one deserves.
What I offer
Two ways to honour a life
Ceremonies
As your celebrant, I will coordinate with your funeral director and the crematorium (or location) to ensure everything runs smoothly. My role is to remove as much pressure as possible, so you can focus on what matters most during a time of loss.
Stories
As your life story narrator, I will guide you through the process of capturing your story with care and attention. My role is to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and shape everything into a written account that feels true to you- that way you can focus on sharing your memories, knowing they are being held and recorded properly.
Every life deserves to be told well
You don't need to have everything figured out — we can simply have a conversation and take it from there.
